What is 2048?

2048 is a sliding number puzzle played on a 4x4 grid. The goal is to combine matching tiles until you create the 2048 tile. You can play 2048 online here in your browser with keyboard controls on desktop and swipe controls on mobile.

This version includes the classic number board and a dessert tile theme inspired by the popular 2048 Cupcakes style. The game rules stay the same, so you can switch the look without relearning the puzzle.

2048 rules

Use the arrow keys, WASD, or swipe on mobile to move all tiles in one direction. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one tile with double the value.

Every move slides the whole board, so empty space matters as much as matching numbers. New tiles appear after successful moves, and the puzzle ends when the board is full and no adjacent tiles can merge.

2048 example

For example, two 2 tiles merge into a 4, two 4 tiles merge into an 8, and two 1024 tiles merge into 2048.

2048 strategy

Try to keep your largest tile in one corner and build around it. Avoid moving the board randomly; every swipe should either merge tiles, preserve your largest tile, or create space for the next move.

A simple 2048 strategy is to keep one edge organized from largest to smallest. If your biggest tile stays in a corner, nearby tiles can feed into it instead of scattering across the board.

2048 Cupcakes-style theme

The classic 2048 board uses numbered tiles, which is best for focused strategy. If you want a lighter look, switch to the cupcake-style theme. It gives the board the feel of a 2048 cupcakes game while keeping small number labels on each dessert tile, so the merge order is still clear.

Searches like 2048 cupcakes, cupcake 2048, and 2048 cupcake game usually point to the same simple idea: 2048 with friendlier themed tiles. Here, the theme is cosmetic only. A cupcake tile still follows the same value ladder as the number version, and your score, moves, and strategy carry over.

Classic numbers or dessert tiles?

Use the number theme when you want the cleanest board for planning moves. Use the cupcake theme when you want the same 2048 puzzle with a softer, more playful look. You can switch themes at any time without restarting the game.
